Fwd: Grabbing the climate bull by its horns.
Two hours of action per week on climate! This is a nice way to be active on climate issues but without having to figure out yourself what to work on. : )

Hi Corinna, On Saturday, the climate emergency ate me for breakfast. We drove our kids to the mountains, and my plan was to take the day "off"; to not think about climate; to enjoy my family and nature; to refuel. But it was 113℉, we were dodging wildfire smoke, and our EV battery drained faster than expected. Of course, we're fortunate and I was thinking about folks without respite from the heat, and without HEPA filters for the smoke. I was thinking about the Exxon tapes https://climatechangemakers.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=694082bcf5db42e817065b72b&id=bd34a451a0&e=f092fd24cf, and about the 2030 version of summer in the American West. Let's just say I was not *not thinking about climate*, and I was not winning. And it felt pretty lousy, because I'm used to grabbing the bull by its horns and kicking its ass, which feels… pretty great.
Today, I'm back in my element, taking action. I'm filled with hope, optimism, and fight, and I'm super fired up to make as big of a dent in this big carbon pollution challenge as humanly possible, alongside this inspiring community of changemakers. And I'm extra fired up for TWO (2!) US Hours of Action each week going forward; this week focused on stopping the nonsense of new fossil fuel projects. The fossil fuel projects *already online* are plenty to contend with. No new ones is a no-brainer, and our work is cut out for us.
The way out of this climate emergency is through action, political action. Now is the time, the wind is at our backs, and we just need to show up and jump in the ring.
See you on Zoom.

US Hours of Action; 2x Weekly; Pick One! Wednesday, July 14th 9a PT / 10a MT / 11a CT / 12p ET *OR *
Thursday, July 15th 5p PT / 6p MT / 7p CT / 8p ET
We're thrilled to add a second weekly US Hour of Action. Not just this week, every week going forward. Can't make it Thursday? Join us Wednesday! We'll be covering the same content, so just pick the date/time that works.
What's in store? This week we're up against a deadline! In order to stop new fossil fuel projects, financing for these major projects needs to end. JP Morgan Chase, Citibank, and Wells Fargo are the top three worst offenders, according to Rainforest Action Network's 2021 Banking on Climate Chaos https://climatechangemakers.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=694082bcf5db42e817065b72b&id=7a493f6789&e=f092fd24cf report. On July 23, these banks, plus Bank of America and Royal Bank of Canada, will decide whether to renew three major loans to Enbridge, the company constructing Line 3 through Minnesota. We're going to try to stop them.
Breakout room action options:
Call these banks and urge them not to renew the Enbridge loans. Call, tweet, and/or write to our own financial institutions and urge them to stop financing new fossil fuel projects across the board. Write Op-Eds and Letters to the Editor, an effective way to reach large audiences that include the general public and all kinds of influential readers— even elected officials. We had our second community Town Hall on 7/7 https://climatechangemakers.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=694082bcf5db42e817065b72b&id=070a6a5bb7&e=f092fd24cf— our first in a while— and we're excited to make it a regular thing going forward. We covered a lot of ground, including our growing impact (see below), our Impact Dashboard, our draft Bedrock Principles (keep an eye on the Slack for an invitation for feedback!), and we had an open forum for discussion. We had a great turnout, lots of engagement, and changemakers brought thoughtful input and questions. The recording is available in the Slack, as a pinned message in the #announcements channel.

Gabrielle joined us in the very early days of Climate Changemakers, and quickly leaned in to lead on all things advocacy— on top of her '9-5' job in policy advocacy. Now that we're officially a 501(c)(4) nonprofit, we're thrilled to bring her on as our second FT employee and have strong internal capacity to support our advocacy work.
Gabrielle's Issue Briefings are a work of art https://climatechangemakers.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=694082bcf5db42e817065b72b&id=a10c55531f&e=f092fd24cf (and a rich resource), and soon will be readily available as a public resource, embedded into our action tool (thanks to Schuyler Karr's hard work!), and accessible on our website. 🚀
Changemaker Spotlight: Khristina Rhead Get to know your fellow changemakers! Khristina is a seasoned, rockstar climate action volunteer and has been a huge help pitching in on content and our Instagram feed. 🙏 What was the first step on your climate journey? Even though this may sound cliche, the first step on my climate journey was learning about the importance of recycling and composting from my parents. By taking part in these activities I first recognized the impact that humans have on the earth. My second step, but first step directly related to one of the biggest causes of climate change, was going with my friend to protests opposing the construction of a pipeline through Maryland and Virginia.
What makes the climate emergency personal to you? My love of rock climbing, hiking, camping, and just generally spending time outside makes the climate emergency personal to me. If we continue down the terrifying climate trajectory we're currently on, I'm afraid that outdoor recreation and leisure will become obsolete. In fact, I've already seen outdoor leisure and recreation become negatively effected by climate change here in California. Fires are starting sooner and lasting longer. Outdoor enthusiasts are starting to have conversations on whether or not we should stop having fires all together while camping. It's sad and scary.
Khristina Rhead of Los Angeles, CA
What keeps you coming back to Climate Changemakers? The opportunity to take action! It feels good to make an impact, however great it is.
When you aren't fighting climate change, what might we find you doing? Rock climbing! Writing, traveling, hiking, and being outside. Want to be featured in the next Newsletter? At Climate Changemakers, we make political climate action a habit.
As we grow, we'll add more Hours of Action each week. For now, we meet: U.S. every Thursday at 5p PT/ 6p MT/ 7p CT/ 8p ET and every Wednesday at 9a PT/ 10a MT/ 11a CT/ 12p ET Europe every other Tuesday at 18:00 CET/ 17:00 BST. Thanks so much Corinna!! Been really wanting to prioritize climate action recently but hard to know where to focus or even start. I've had the 5pm Thurs one in my calendar for a while, and this is a great reminder / I really appreciate the second hour. Hope to see some of y'all there!
P.S. I'm late to the party but currently finally reading Ministry for the Future. Highly recommend it to everyone who hasn't read it yet, and I would love to host/join a book club on it sometime. Or just talk about the ideas with anyone.
