Fwd: write postcards / help Georgia voters flip the Senate
Hi folks,
Hope you're doing as well as possible! In case you're finding any time/energy to help flip the Senate via the Georgia runoff, I wanted to share some opportunities to write postcards, make phone calls, and/or donate to this effort.
1. *Write postcards to Georgia* to encourage Democrats to get to the polls for the January 5th election. Flip the West (a partner organization) has given us a list of 10,000 Georgia Democrats to write to and we need more writers!
We’ll provide the cards, addresses instructions, and script. All you have to do is buy the stamps and write. Listen to music, watch TV, write when you want to and help flip the Senate.
If you'd like to join, *please email F.E. at f.e.youngsculpture@gmail.com f.e.youngsculpture@gmail.com. *All she needs is the number of cards you want and your address for shipping. You can help change the world one postcard at a time!!
(aside: my house and I wrote about 600 over two rounds, one pre-Nov election, and it was meditative & fun & concrete. We still have a bit of time to send these, but the sooner the better!)
2. *Make phone calls or donate*: a message from my friend Monica who has been calling white rural voters in Georgia every weekend since August (!):
Hi friend,
I hope that you are finding some ease and glimmers of joy as this hard year comes to a close.
On January 5th, Georgia voters will decide the fate of the U.S. Senate in two run-off elections. If Democrats win both seats, the Republicans will lose their stranglehold on our country's government and we'll have a real opportunity to push for the kinds of national policy we so desperately need. We only have a few weeks to turn out voters to elect Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock to the Senate.
*In the spirit of hope and urgency, I'd like to share a few ways that you can support the organizing efforts that are happening on the ground in Georgia. *
As you may know, I started calling white rural voters in Georgia back in August with SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice). Greg and I spent every Saturday leading up to Nov. 3 on the phones and writing postcards. After two years in Wisconsin, we understood how much effort it takes for progressives to keep fighting in more conservative climates and how helpful outside support can be. And while I imagined at the start of this year that I'd be volunteering in Wisconsin as a field canvasser, instead I found myself calling Georgia voters for deep canvas phone banks.
In response to the call from many BIPOC organizers that white folks "call our cousins", SURJ volunteers called 1 million white voters in Georgia leading up to the general election. I was so proud to be part of a campaign that was rooted in dismantling white supremacy and fighting fascism at the polls. I've also been humbled by the long haul organizing work that visionaries like Stacey Abrams and others have been doing for many years to build electoral power in the state.
Building on that momentum, SURJ is all in for the run-off elections with ambitious goals to call and canvas. I'm calling on Saturdays and Thursdays. Would you join me in taking action if you aren't already?
