re: defunding police:
apparently armed cops are awful to hospital patients in SF and here is a
campaign/petition about it.
Johanna (friend from Starbarf who lives in Fallopia! and is a midwife!)
sent this along a while ago with the compelling personal note.

Friends who live in San Francisco! Did you know that the department of
Public health has a contract with the sf county sherriffs to provide
security at their locations, including SFGH? Are you surprised that these
armed law enforcement agents are as awful to patients as any armed law
enforcement agent in the US is to POC in this country? Can you imagine how
traumatizing it would be to have to interact with/be harassed by said law
enforcement agents while seeking medical care, particularly if you yourself
were a person of color and/or low-income, as most of SFGH's patients are?
Does it seem like someone else should be providing "security" at the
hospital rather than the sherriffs?
If you agree, please see deets below on how to contact your supervisor to
demand that DPH divest from the sheriffs department, and tell everyone you
know. For "relationship to SFGH" you can just say you are a community
member if you have not other association.
One month ago, a former midwifery school classmate of mine who works at the
general witnessed and intervened in an incident of harassment perpetrated
by a group of sherrifs towards a patient. This was the straw that broke the
camels back for her and she has gone out on strike to demand the removal of
sherriffs from SFGH. She is the only black midwife on staff, and this is an
immeasurable loss to her patients. Please support her cause!

Dear Supervisor [insert name]**, Supervisors Walton, Fewer, Yee, Ronen, and

I am writing as a ________year resident of district __ and/or I have worked

*[insert your relationship to SFGH]*
Today, I am writing to you on behalf of DPH Must Divest to ask for your
support. We are a coalition of healthcare workers, academics, advocates,
and community members. We are calling for the immediate defunding of the
sheriffs in this years’ DPH budget, termination of the MOU between the
sheriff and DPH, and establishment of a funded oversight committee of
Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) staff and community members
to monitor and center safety for all at SFGH and other DPH sites.
Recent events and historical patterns tell us that law enforcement violence
disparately impacts BIPOC people, leading to trauma, physical harm, and
death. In fact, the American Public Health Association has declared police
violence a public health issue. And still, SFGH—a lifeline for many BIPOC
community members—is part of a minority (less than 1%) of U.S. hospitals
that use armed law enforcement as their primary security provider. *[insert
personal anecdote about negative experience with sheriff]*
Based on SFGH’s own data, almost half of the calls to the sheriff at SFGH
are for staff assistance in clinical spaces. Officers of the law are the
wrong tool for this job. Instead of armed personnel, we need staff with a
trauma-informed approach that focuses on de-escalation while holding safety
for patients, community members, and staff as equal priorities. These
models already exist at SFGH – the Behavioral Health Emergency Response
Team (BERT) has already proven to reduce calls to the sheriff and address
patient care needs, but it’s reach is limited. Programs like this need to
be expanded. *[insert personal positive anecdote with de-escalation or
trauma informed approaches].*
We encourage you to review our website (https://www.dphmustdivest.com/
for many personal stories of the harmful impact the presence of the sheriff
has had at ZSFG. We understand that any divestment from the sheriff must
come with re-investment in solutions that center safety for all on campus.
The time is now to take a strong stand and return SFGH to a place of
healing. We know that we can find a solution that keeps staff, patients,
and the community safe, without inflicting more harm. This can be done. We
call on you to support us.
